2 Corinthians 2:14-15 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.
Over the last couple of months, we have gone through several holidays. The one common thread among all holidays is the many feasts that are laid out at millions of homes across the country. When we walk into someone’s home and our hosts are preparing the meal there is a wonderful aroma that fills the entire house. It cannot be escaped no matter where we go in the house, it seems to be all-encompassing.
Paul is using this thought-provoking metaphor for the presence of Christ Jesus in this life, by referring to His glorious presence as an aroma. Like the aroma of the feast of the holidays that cannot be escaped, this aroma of Christ Jesus is inescapable. When the people of the world see the life of victory that is being lived by the children of the King, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, there is an aroma released that is unmistakable. Unlike the aroma in the homes of our family and friends that are created by humans this aroma of Christ Jesus can only be created by Almighty God. The closer we are to Christ the more this wonderful aroma will be mirrored by our lives. When we spend time, each day immersed in His Word, communicating with our Lord and Savior through a daily prayer life, this aroma of Christ Jesus will accompany us. When we give of ourselves to others in need, physically and spiritually, there will be a fragrance of love and grace that can be created only through Christ Jesus.
God uses us, as believers and followers of Christ Jesus, to spread this wonderful aroma to the saved and unsaved alike. There are several sources from which this aroma can be sent to God. The aroma of our prayers is especially sweet to God. We know what we feel like when we hear from one of our own children, just imagine what God feels like when He hears from one of His children. God stands ready to forgive all of our sins, past, present, and future so the aroma of our repentance is a sweet smelling fragrance to God.
The Apostle Paul has given us a charge “to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.” Imagine what a sweet smelling fragrance it is to God when one of His children witnesses to others, especially the lost of this world, about His great love, grace, and mercy. The question is what aroma are we emitting through our lives today? Spend time with God, through His Holy Word and prayer every day so that we can give off the fragrance of the knowledge of the saving power of Christ Jesus to this lost, dark and dying world.
