Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
There
is clear Biblical evidence that one without the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit
does not only not comprehend the things that come from the spirit of God, but
does not accept them (1
Corinthians 2:14). This verse talks
about something that all believers and followers of Christ Jesus strive for,
and that is pleasing God. Authentic faith in God does not only indicate that
one believes that some higher power exists, but that there is only one true
God. When a person gets to a low point in their lives that they denounce the
existence of the one true God, it is tantamount to saying that God is a liar (1 John 5:10).
The
very first step to pleasing God is to accept Christ Jesus as our Lord and
Savior, turn our backs on the ways of the world, and surrender our lives
completely and fully to God. Moreover, it is the day by day application of a life
of faith in the lives of believers that pleases God. God is well pleased when
we are justified (personal salvation) but He is also pleased with a sanctified
and surrendered (daily spiritual growth) implementation of life.
When
believers and followers in Christ Jesus rely on their power or some good deeds
they may be attempting, they are not pleasing God. Adopting legalism and
attempting to follow the law by trying to place ourselves on a higher plane
than those around us, do not please God. Our union with God, through Christ
Jesus, can never be broken once it is established; however, our fellowship and
daily walk with God can become rough and rocky when we allow ourselves to be
drawn away by the ways of this world. The writer of Hebrews did not say that it
was difficult to please God, it only requires our faith placed in Him and Him
alone. The writer of the Book of Hebrews rightly pointed out that without our
faith in Him, it is impossible to please God.
Hebrews
chapter 11 speaks of many people throughout the history of the Bible that by
their faith pleased God. This chapter is the “Hall of Fame” of people that
simply through their faith, pleased God. Enoch never experienced death, he was
taken by God as he was lauded as one that pleased God (vs 5). Noah built a large boat in a world that had never seen rain, simply
because God told him to build it. Noah did not have to research data to find
out how to build a boat, he simply placed his faith and trust in God, and God
did the rest. Noah’s only qualification was that he was surrendered to God,
through faith. The list goes on and on throughout this chapter, but the primary
factor is the words, “by faith.”
God
rewards those that seek after Him and believe that He exists absolutely and
undeniably, that He has always existed, that He did not come into existence nor
will He ever go out of existence. There is nothing that we have or that we are
that God requires, everything that exists He created, thusly there is nothing
that we can do or nothing that we can give to God that might please Him. Our
faith in the above-mentioned facts and our willingness to surrender our wills
to God, to seek after His will for our lives, through faith, is the only way to
please God.
When
we drive our automobiles at night our headlight shows us only a few yards ahead
of where we are going, we do not see the entire journey. Faith means that even
though we cannot see the end of the path that God has us on, we believe that we
are on the right path. God is the light that illuminates our paths, but He does
not show us the end of the path, that we accept through faith.
