Bible Verse of the Day Sunday May 10th, 2020 (Mother’s Day)

2 Timothy 1:5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

This is part of a message written by Paul to Timothy, who Paul considered to be “his dear son” (1 Timothy 1:2). Timothy was one of Paul’s missionary partners during his call of Christ Jesus to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. The focus of this message to Timothy was to encourage him to stand firm in his faith in Christ Jesus and continuing to carry the good news of the Gospel to all parts of the earth. Paul was bringing to Timothy’s mind the first people that witnessed to him about the saving grace of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. Timothy’s father was a Jew but at some point, his grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice had surrendered their lives to Christ and accepted Him as their Lord and Savior. There is little doubt that the Mentoring of his mother and grandmother was the primary reason that Timothy had given his life to Christ and answered the call to carry the gospel to all the earth.

Paul wrote this from his captivity in Rome shortly before his audience with the emperor that was most likely going to result in his death. Knowing that Timothy would no longer have the guidance of his mentor, Paul was reminding him of his faith in Christ that was first taught him by his mother and grandmother.

Children today need the guidance of their mothers, grandmothers as well as all adults in their lives to teach them early in life of the saving grace of God through Christ Jesus. As parents and grandparents, we do not have to be a Bible scholar to teach our children about Christ Jesus. The important factor is that we are surrendered to Christ and following the leading guiding and direction of the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit will lead us into the truth that we can teach our children.

This Mother’s Day some reading this commentary are blessed to still have their Mothers with them here in this life and some of our mothers have already gone home to be with Christ Jesus. Whether your Mom is no longer with us, as in my case, or you are blessed to still have your Mom around to encourage and support you, always remember that our lives are a reflection of what our Moms have tried to train us to be. What do our actions tell the world? Do we honor or dishonor the guidance and teachings of our Mothers? There is no better way to honor our Moms this Mother’s Day and every day than to follow the teachings of Christ Jesus, first given to us by our Mothers.
