This Independence Day, we are celebrating freedom of the
Colonies from the tyranny of the British Throne. The Declaration of
Independence was sent to King George on July 4th, 1776, specifying that all 12
Colonies were united in their fight for freedom. This document did not set our
early ancestors free; it took a war that lasted over seven years and cost the
lives of thousands of people. Since then, millions of brave men and women have
fought and shed their blood on battlefields from Concord to Afghanistan to
maintain the freedom that we know today.
Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus shed His blood on the Hill of
Calvary to set us free from Satan and sin. Jesus has the power to unshackle and
set free spiritual servants from their captivity to Satan and sin, along with
all its consequences. True spiritual freedom comprises liberty from the control
of Satan to follow God’s will. In other words, once the Son sets us free, we
are free to follow what is pleasing in God’s sight. Spiritual freedom stems
from our faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26). This verse tells us
that the Son, that is the Son of God, has set us free making us sons and
daughters of Christ Jesus. Not all people are sons or daughters, only those
that have placed their faith and trust in Christ Jesus as their Lord and
Savior. All people are indeed creations of God, but faith is the only vehicle
that will include us in the Royal family of God. Our standing with God is
sustained by our faith in Christ Jesus, not on any good works or deeds on which
we might come to depend.
Before we accepted Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior and were saved,
a choice was not available to us, we followed our sinful human nature, which is
predisposed to all Satan’s lies and deceits. The sacrifice of Christ Jesus on
the Cross of Calvary has set us free from the chains and bondage of Satan and
sin. We have a choice as to who we want to follow, Satan, with all the flash
and glamor of the world that ends in death. On the other hand, we can choose
Christ Jesus, who is the only way to God, which leads to eternal life. We have
been set free from the control and mechanism of the domain of Satan and sin
through the substitutionary work of Christ on the Cross of Calvary.
Once we are set free from Satan and the sin that so easily
entangles us, we should live our lives as free people. We should never use our
freedom as a deception for evil but live to reflect the light of Christ out to
the world (1 Peter 2:16). Once we are set free by the Son of God and
become servants of God instead of Satan, the blessings that we know will
direct us in our spiritual walk and lead us to the most significant benefit of
all, Eternal life.
