Colossians 3:5-6 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
Paul starts this verse of
scripture with the strongest of terms, telling all Christians to "put to
death" or kill all worldly longings, cravings, and yearnings. He is not
saying that we should somehow constraint or limit the works or deeds of evil.
Paul is telling all that follow and believe in Christ Jesus that we should
eradicate and exterminate our old human nature. We "put to death"
these things in seeing ourselves dead to sin (Romans 6:14); to indulge or even
entertain any worldly or carnal desires is to give it the nourishment it
requires to thrive. Paul created this extensive list of carnal sins because we
must acknowledge these as sins, so that we might not drift into an
unrecognizable sin.
All of our sins were washed
clean through the substitutionary work of Christ Jesus on Calvary's Cross. All
of our dirty, grimy, and tattered rags have been replaced with the unblemished
cloak of uprightness and blamelessness. Every human being who has ever lived,
living now or will ever live has placed their faith and trust in Christ Jesus
as their Lord and Savior is recognized and acknowledged with Him. For this
reason, the Apostle Paul is telling us that we must deem and count the parts of
our human body dead to carnal and worldly things. Furthermore, he reminds all
followers and believers in Christ Jesus that we were crucified along with
Christ Jesus, and we should not voluntarily allow ourselves to be taken back
into servitude by Satan and his evil followers. Our old sinful nature will
raise its ugly head now and then while we are in these frail and weak bodies
that we inhabit in this life. However, we are to shun and turn away from any
impure, evil things that would lead to our desire for greed and self-worth.
God does not want us to impair
or injure the evil things in this life, nor does he desire that we take them as
hostages. In this battle with Satan and his evil followers, both spiritual and
human, we are to take no prisoners. We are to "put to death" any
things affiliated with Satan's evil works.
