Colossians 3:9-10 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Lying
is much more than just spouting off some untruth; it attempts to deceive people
and misrepresent the truth. A lie can cause distrust, which could damage the
testimony of a child of God. When we function in the world of fabrication and
deceit, we do not comprehend the connection between the follower's life and
believer in Christ Jesus and the walk of the true Christian (Romans 9:1). There is only one source of lies, and we all know
where they originate (John
8:44).
Taking
off our old self and putting on the new person is somewhat compared to
disregarding an old worn out outfit of clothing and replacing it with a new
attire. There will be an intense and sincere transformation in a person at
their new birth, as a child of God. This is more than just a change of clothes;
it is a profound deep-seated, tectonic movement that changes the new believer's
relationship with all that he or she comes in contact with. We were given a new
clean life through the sacrifice Christ Jesus made on the Cross of Calvary; he
does not want us to attempt to laundry the old set of clothing; he wants us to
put on the new array of garments.
The
putting on of our new person is in a constant flux towards spiritual maturity
that is being transformed through a knowledge of God's Word. This sanctification
process will give us a deep heart's desire to want to know more about our
creator, our sustainer, and our Savior. It will also cause a day to day
transformation of ourselves into the image of Christ Jesus. Paul is most
certainly referring to the fact that we, as humans, are created in the image of
God. However, as Adam is considered the old person, that should be put aside because
we are now being transformed into the image of the last Adam, Christ Jesus, a
life-giving spirit (1
Corinthians 15:45).
The
putting aside our old selves and the putting on of our new selves comes from a
knowledge of who Christ Jesus is and what He has done and is continuing to do
for us. This revitalization can only be perpetrated through a continued search
for the truth of the Gospel, and that can only be found in one source, God's
Holy Word. We can only experience this invigorated and energized new person in
and through a personal, close, and profound daily walk with our Lord and
Savior, Christ Jesus. We cannot physically walk with Christ Jesus as his
original disciples did when He was on the earth. However, God has led some of
these people that were with Jesus on the earth to write down what they learned
from Jesus and pass that information down through the generations.
We
call that the Bible, the Word of God incarnate. A daily regimen of reading and
studying this most valuable treasure along with daily prayer, surrender to
Christ Jesus, and a willingness to serve God and others will be as sweet of a
walk with Christ Jesus as the ones that were physically with Him during His
earthly ministry.
