James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
When we consider the grace that fills our hearts and souls, we have only one option, and that is to humble ourselves before God. Jesus humbled himself before the world by joyfully going to the Cross of Calvary to pay a sin debt that He did not owe; he did it for us because He knew that we could never pay this debt that we owed (Philippians 2:8; Hebrews 12:2).
There have been many true revivals down through the ages. The first one was the day of Pentecost, where about 3000 people came to know Jesus as their Savior in one day, from one sermon message. This message was Peter’s first Sermon, and the first Sermon preached after the ascension of Jesus. This message is in the second chapter of Acts, and it would do all Christians well to read it now and then. These were lifted by Jesus that day because they all humbled themselves and got their hearts right with God. This day and age revivals are different, some guest preacher comes to a church and preaches for several days. There will be some conversions during that time, and if just one person came to know Jesus through the revival meeting, it would make it all worthwhile. However, that is not what true revival is; a real God-centered revival is where all the people humble themselves before God and get their hearts right with Him.
The biggest roadblock to true revival is pride, people would get their hearts right before God, but that would mean you have to admit that your heart is not already right. There was a deacon in a church I attended some years ago that came forward in a revival meeting and told God and everyone in attendance that night that he had just been playing church. He got his heart right before God and accepted Christ Jesus as his true Lord and Savior that night. Many people realize that they have just been going through the motions of being a Christian and one day genuinely humble themselves before God and ask Jesus to come into their life as their Lord and Savior. When we turn our backs on the pride that stands in our way and humble ourselves before God, He will lift us up. Pride will repel the grace of God from entering our hearts; humility will tear down the barriers and allow God’s grace to work in our lives.
When Jesus preached the most excellent Sermon ever preached, the Sermon on the Mount, He opened it up with a statement on the importance of humility. This teaching also showed the repercussion if we do not humble ourselves before God.
(Matthew 5:1-3).
