Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
There is a famous saying that
"we should not be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good."
As humans, we tend to think about worldly things; naturally, we don't have to
apply ourselves to any great length to reflect on things of this world. These
worldly matters are not always the evil things that Satan places before us but
the usual daily activities that form our earthly life. For example, we all have
bills we must pay, there is the upkeep on our homes and automobiles, we must
provide for our families the staples of life, the list could go on forever, but
you get the idea.
Thoughts on heavenly matters
are something that does not come as natural. We must discipline ourselves to
spend time every day in prayer and the study of God's Word. It is quite easy to
get comfortable with our jobs and home life that we put God and His Holy Word
on the back burner. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were able to survive as nomads in
Canaan because they possessed Heaven's proper mindset (Hebrews 11:8-10).
If we put God first and foremost in our lives, the things of this world we must
accomplish will become so much more uncomplicated.
In the study of history, you
will find that the Christians that did the most good for humankind were the
ones that had a heavenly-minded attitude. The 12 Apostles were ordinary men
that turned the world upside down because they occupied their minds with
heavenly matters. I think of Brother Billy Graham; in his lifetime, he did so
much to further the Gospel of Christ Jesus and introduce people to our Lord and
Savior. Although he has gone home to be with the Lord his work continues today
and will continue in the years to come through His wonderful ministry. I read
somewhere that Brother Billy once said that he was never out of arms reach of a
Bible; he set his mind on Heavenly things.
We keep our minds on heavenly
matters because that is where our Savior is. As Christians, we know that He
will one Day return to earth to take His children home. Many out there today do
not believe that Jesus is coming back (2 Peter 3:4); thus, they do not
keep Heaven in mind. However, for believers and followers of Christ Jesus, that
should be our top priority, keeping our minds and hearts focused on Heaven. If
this heavenly mindset is a firm belief in Christians' lives, it should create a
desire to await His return eagerly. It should cause us to see earthly affairs
as of little importance when compared with Heavenly things and live our lives
above the ways of the world.
If we give God the first chair in our lives and occupy our minds with heavenly matters, we will naturally do earthly good. Although we must mind our worldly obligations, let us always keep Heaven in mind.
