Proverbs 3:7 Do not
be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
Sometimes we might get the idea that we believe we know more than we do, which can place a severe barrier on our learning process. When we begin to comprehend our lack of wisdom, we will then be open to a treasure trove of information from the Word of God that will change our lives in a way that we could never have imagined. This process will require humility and the foundation that humility comes from, which is our love for Christ Jesus. If we will but remember God created us and depend upon Him for every aspect of our lives, humility will become the only path we desire to travel. Dissimilar from the pride that comes naturally, we must clothe ourselves in humility (Colossians 3:12) by adding it to our character through the power of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God.
The greatness of God is so far beyond any human speculation, which in itself should cause us to be less obstinate of our ideas and opinions, and more open to the truth of God's Word. This short verse of Scripture contains information upon which all of our service and hope in God originates. In every aspect of life, we should seek the counsel of the Word of God, and in doing so, it will inspire our behavior to the point of following God's will for our lives.
Because of the influence of Satan, pride or being wise in our own eyes is with us almost from the time we are born. Satan will attempt to lead us to a carnal humility that we become proud of because we got there on our own. The difference between carnal humility and true spiritual humility is believing what God says in His Holy Word is the absolute truth and following the example of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. There has been only one that lived a perfect life of humility, and that was Christ Jesus. Consequently, there is only one person's example that we can follow to clothe ourselves in humility, our Lord and Savior. The bottom line is that true Godly spiritual humility comes from total surrender to Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul said that we should make it our goal to please our Lord and Savior, and a true spiritually humble life surrendered to God would please Him greatly (2 Corinthians 5:9).
