Bible Verse of the Day Wednesday June 23rd 2021

Psalm 73:25-26 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73 was one of twelve Psalms written by Asaph, who, along with his sons, were commissioned by King David to lead the people in Worship. When Nehemiah finished his rebuilding project of Jerusalem, they were recommissioned (1 Chronicles 25:1; Nehemiah 12:46-47).

These verses are a picturesque representation of a yearning heart for God and an eternity spent with Him. Asaph most probably understood that the joys and rewards of heaven were more than any human mind could comprehend. In heaven, we are going to see Angels, streets of gold, the fellowship of people of God that have lived down through the ages. However, all of that beauty and majesty will pale in comparison to being in the presence of the one that loves us like no human ever could, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. The world offers everyone a facade of supposable rewards, such as fame and fortune. However, just because Satan dangles the idea of earthly wealth and celebrity before us, like a carrot on a stick, does not mean that we will ever attain this fool’s paradise. Satan’s objective is not to supply all people with a bank full of gold and silver and a mansion on a hill; his goal is to keep us focused on the ways of the world so we will not have time for the things of God.

There are so many today and from times of old that are more focused on worldly prosperity than the spiritual riches we can know through a personal relationship with Christ Jesus. God is our creator and our sustainer; He has promised to never leave or forsake us. He will provide all our needs as we walk in this earthly life and see us safely to an eternal glory. What else could we ever desire or need? God never intended there to be anything in our life that takes His place in our hearts, minds, bodies, spirits, and souls. God also loves us enough to bring us to the point where we can sing the phrase from the text verse: “Whom have I in heaven but you?” God accomplishes this by taking away the idols and props in our lives that allow us to falsely believe that we do not need Him. God’s desire is to remove anything from our lives that would prevent us from making Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior and placing all of our faith and trust in Him.

Our hearts fail us, not just in a physical sense, but in the spiritual province as well. Our spiritual hearts will turn towards the lures of this world and lead us far away from God and the true joys of this life. However, along with the graduation from our own willpower to surrender to Christ Jesus, God will remove our heart that has become hard and stony and replace it with a new heart and a new spirit, one that is dedicated to the calling of God on our lives.

There is only one thing that we retain when our bodies are lowered down into the grave, that is our relationship with Christ Jesus. He is the only thing that really last, so why would we want to set Him aside for the transitory short-lived fame and fortune of this world.
