2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong
This verse of scripture
was a response from God when Paul pleaded with Him three times to take away his
"thorn in the flesh." The response Paul got from God may not have
been the one that he desired, but God responded to Him, nonetheless. How many
times are we tempted to close our spiritual ears when God's response to us was
not quite the one we desired? God could choose to take away the load we bear,
or He could strengthen the shoulders that carry the load. God was telling Paul
that He would show His strength through Paul's weakness.
For this to be successful, Paul had to believe that the Grace of God was sufficient. But, to honestly believe and trust that God's Grace is sufficient, we must accept that we are insufficient. The Grace of God is, at times, a challenging thing for us to get our heads wrapped around. Especially in our Western Civilization, people want to think of themselves as self-made and entirely rely on themselves. But we cannot obtain God's strength until we know and accede to our weakness.
"My grace is sufficient for you." When is His Grace sufficient for us? The answer is right now. It is not that His Grace will be enough for us sometime in the future; it is at this very moment, at this precise heartbeat. We might think that something would have to change for His Grace to be enough to see us through. We might mistakenly believe that His Grace was sufficient enough in times past, but the heavy load we carry now is just too much to bear. These feelings all come from Satan, who does not want us to depend on God; he wants us to go it alone, knowing that we will stumble and fall. Do not listen to him; tell him to get behind you because no matter what we might think, the truth of God's Word stands strong. The truth of God's Word is, "My grace is sufficient for you."
Charles Spurgeon once said: "It is easy
to believe in Grace for the past and the future, but to rest in it for the
immediate necessity is true faith. So,
believer, it is now that Grace is sufficient: even at this moment, it is enough
for you." "My grace is sufficient
for you." We praise God that He did not say that His Grace was enough for
the Apostle Paul; God meant it for all people. This very moment,
"you" can be the "you" in "My grace is sufficient for
you." None of us are beyond the reach of God's love and His amazing Grace.
We are no different from Paul or the millions of others that have known the
victory through Christ Jesus. God's sufficient Grace is for all of His
children, this very second, from all times past and in all future times.
