Proverbs 18:10-11 The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.
These two verses are a comparison and a contrast to each other,
two paths to separate places of safety, security, and protection. One, the
authentic, while the other is dreadfully very imaginary and illusory. Verse ten
speaks of the Name of the Lord with all of its powers, strengths, and glory,
while verse eleven speaks of the false belief that a rich person's wealth will
be their strong tower. The former is like the high mountain ranges, while the
latter resembles the fleeting sands of time.
The Lord's name represents
all God has made known of Himself to humankind in the annals of His Holy Word.
Therefore, God is the personification and embodiment of all knowledge, wisdom,
and power where the righteous, that is, those in right standing with God, flee
for peace and safety.
The rich will attempt to
hide behind their wall of wealth, believing it to be an imperishable barrier;
all the while, it is an illusion made of smoke and mirrors. The rich will
falsely think that their wealth can bring about comfort in whatever adversarial
circumstance or predicament they find themselves in. For example, if one finds
themselves in a quandary with law enforcement, their wealth will buy them the
best advocate. In total opposition to this scenario, the person in right standing
with God will have to their possession all that the rich falsely believe they
have, and more than the human mind can even comprehend (Lamentations 3:24).
In antiquity, there were large,
tall towers built on strategic spots along the city walls. Those responsible
for spotting an enemy attack could see them coming in enough time to secure the
city Gates. God's fortified tower stands above all enemies that might mount an
attack on our wellbeing. Satan will sometimes attempt a frontal assault, while
he might try coming at us on our flanks at other times. Being the coward that
he is, he might even try to sneak up on us from behind. However, no matter from
which direction he comes at us, God's fortified tower is the protective bastion
that will provide us with a place of safety from Satan's flaming arrows of
temptation.
