Mark 14:72 Immediately, the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
It
is believed, by countless Bible students, that Peter wept each time he recalled
the time he denied Jesus. It is not difficult to believe because he had sinned
against the one about to go to the Cross to secure his salvation. We will never
have the opportunity to see Jesus in the flesh and deny Him as the Savior of
the world. However, as born-again followers and believers in Christ Jesus,
there are times that we falter in our faith in Him. When we first got saved,
maybe we made some vows to Christ Jesus that we have not kept to this day. We
consume our own words in a bitter lake of repentance when we think of what we
vowed and how we have fallen short of that commitment. In the same manner, as
Peter remembered the Words of Jesus and wept, we shed showers of tears.
The
fact that Peter denied Jesus, the giving in to Satan, and the oaths and
profanity used to commit this sin not only one time, but three times would go
with him to the grave. Yet, each time he thought about it, tears of repentance
would flow from his eyes. Similarly, when we think about the many times we fall
into temptation, it should cause a flood of tears to fall from our eyes.
An
old fable talked about God sending down three Angels to bring back the most
valuable thing on the earth. The first Angel brought back gold, the second
silver, they were both told that neither was the most valuable thing on earth.
Finally, the third Angel stood in a park and spotted a man on his knees
praying, with tears flowing from his eyes. The Angel took one of the tears back
to Heaven. God told the Angel that the tears of repentance were, in fact, the
most valuable thing on this earth.
Peter
was moved to tears when he thought about Jesus’ suffering on the Cross of
Calvary to bring forgiveness to all. When we think about where we were and
where Christ Jesus has taken us to, it will undoubtedly lead us to tears of
Joy.
