2nd Christmas Advent (Faith)
Matthew
1:18-21 This
is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged
to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant
through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the
law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind
to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the
Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be
afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from
the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the
name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
After such a frantic and
tumultuous year, we can find comfort and peace when we take time to reflect on
the Christmas Advent season. The first Advent which we celebrated last week was
the Advent of Hope. The world sees hope as looking forward to something that
might happen. However, Christians view hope in God’s analysis, which is a sure
thing, the hope of the coming of Christ Jesus to take His children home.
This week we celebrate the Advent
of Faith and Love. The second Sunday of Advent allows us an opportunity to
focus on the Prophecies that God has bestowed upon us. Especially the promise
of the second coming of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus (Acts 1:6-11). This
2nd week of Advent, we remember who God is and what He has done for us.
Sometimes, our lives are on the fast track, and we cannot find time for
worship, Bible study, and prayer. In study and prayer, allotting time for God
lets us remember the many blessings God has bestowed upon us.
We should never forget that we do
not earn our blessings through our works and deeds. It might seem that way
because too many do not see and acknowledge God’s grace and mercy. We have
nothing apart from Almighty God; apart from Him, we are paupers. He is the
resource of our blessings because this world is His handiwork. Everything we
“own” actually belongs to God (Psalms 24:1). We can purchase a bed through our
works, but we cannot buy a good night’s sleep. We can purchase a house, but we
cannot buy a home. As we prepare our hearts, minds, bodies, and souls to celebrate
the birth of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, let it stimulate our hearts and
lives to a sense of anticipation; preparing ourselves as we faithfully await
the opportunity to celebrate the sure promised arrival of our Lord and Savior,
Christ Jesus.
