John 6:28-29 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires? “Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."
The group of people that Jesus was talking to this day wholly misunderstood the precise point that our Savior was making. He did not mean that people would have to do some innovative deeds to please God, but that the treasures and rewards of this world were not worth chasing after. This group of Jews that Jesus was speaking to this day believed in a works salvation, they were confused about salvation by grace through faith. Like many today, they thought that they could do something to get the approval of God. However, salvation by works is missing the intention that eternal life is something given, not something earned (Romans 10:2-4).
Many
today believe that there is something that one has to do to be saved, such as
baptism or belonging to a specific denomination. This belief is a total
misunderstanding that eternal life is a gift and a lack of a grasp of the grace
of God. There is only one qualification for salvation: believing and accepting
Christ Jesus. Notice in John 6:29 that Jesus did not say the works we must do
but the work of God; there is only one work needed: faith and trust in Christ
Jesus as our Lord and Savior. The work of God mentioned in this verse is not
anything that we can do for God but accept what God has done for us. This faith
that we place in Christ Jesus is apart from the works of the law (Romans 3:28).
Our
place is to believe and have faith in what God has done for us through Christ
Jesus; faith presents no merit to God. We come before God emptying ourselves so
that God can fill us with His grace.
People
often ask someone, what do you do for a living? We are characterized in some
part by the work that we do. But, on the other hand, God depicts us by His
grace and not by any works or deeds we might accomplish. Consequently, the work
that God has for us to do is to fully trust in Christ Jesus, surrendering
ourselves to Him, spirit, mind, body, and soul.
Jesus
made it very plain what the “work of God” was, but the earthly attitudes of the
ones that were present the day Jesus said this was centered and focused on
worldly matters. It is the same today; too many people, even Christians, get
bogged down with what the world has to offer and miss what the “work of God”
really is. It is to believe in the one sent by God to save the world from their
sins (Ephesians 2:8-9).
