Judges
2:3 I will not drive them out before you; they will become
traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’”
One of the most critical
issues in the modern-day church is that too many people trudge down the same
rocky path Israel followed when they first came into the Promised Land. Too
quickly they forgot the marvelous miracles of deliverance given them by God,
and too fast, they fell into the sinful habits of those who already lived in
the land God promised them. Too quickly they turned their backs on the glorious
miracles God had bestowed on them and took on the habits of the inhabitants of
their new home. Finally, God told them to drive them out, but they began to
intermingle with them instead.
We hear people talking
about a hard time that they are having in serving the Lord. It is tough to
change. Unless we are washed in the Blood of the Lamb and walking in obedience
to God’s Word, we can’t change. We don’t have the power to change, no matter
how much willpower we might think we have. We cannot change our hearts,
nor can we erase the guilt that we feel. We cannot erase from our memory all
the things that we have done that were part of our human nature to do.
There is only one way
we can know victory in our lives and live above sin. Only one path leads to a
consistent Christian lifestyle that gives God glory. First, we must abandon the
things of this world that continually drag us down. We cannot play around with
the things of this world and live in victory. It just doesn’t work. The
Children of Israel attempted to do the same thing, resulting in the wrath of
God coming down on their heads.
The life of a
half-hearted, half-committed, and worldly-minded Christian has to be the most
miserable life that anyone can live. We would be experiencing the worst of both
worlds. On the sinful side, we can’t enjoy our sin because the Holy Spirit
keeps us under conviction, and we feel miserable because we are letting our
Savior down. On the side of Righteousness, we never enjoy our salvation because
we live in defeat. So we consistently dig up that old dead person out of their
grave and allow them to hang out with us.
If we want to live life victoriously
in Christ. If we are tired of some roller-coaster ride of feeling saved one day
and the next day having doubts. If we are ready to walk with the Lord to be
steady and over-coming, we must drive out the idols in our life that remind us
of our past. If we allow them to remain in our lives, remember what God said to
the Children of Israel. “I will not drive them out before you; they will become
traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.”
