Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
One
of the missions of the Holy Spirit is to turn our eyes away from ourselves and
lead us into fixing our eyes on Jesus. On the other hand, Satan will attempt to
get us to focus on ourselves more and on Jesus less. Satan will tell us that we
are too much of a sinner for Jesus to forgive us. He will try to persuade us
that we have no faith and do not deserve the joy of serving God. These ideas
are about self, and we can never find the comfort and assurance we need looking
inward. The Holy Spirit will tell us that we are nothing, but that Christ Jesus
is everything. We must always remember that it is not our hold on Christ Jesus
that saves us; it is Christ Jesus. It is not the joy we receive from serving
Christ Jesus that saves us; it is Christ Jesus. It is not even our faith that
assures us eternal life; it is the perfect, sinless, innocent blood that Jesus
shed for us on the Cross of Calvary. We will never find the rest, the peace and
comfort that we so desperately need, banking on our prayers, good deeds, or
feelings. It is what Jesus is and not what we are that leads us to comfort and
rest in our souls.
There
is only one absolute path to finding victory: keeping our eyes, and our lives
focused on Jesus. In Hebrews chapter 11, we will find an extensive list of
people from the Bible that walked by faith. Some people refer to this section
of scripture as the 'Hall of Fame of faith.” Jesus has laid out the pathway
that we must travel to walk by faith in God. More certainly, the earthly
ministry of Jesus gives us the ultimate example of one walking in absolute
faith. If we choose to follow Jesus, keeping our eyes fixed on Him, He will
never let us down.
Christ
Jesus is the perfect example of walking by faith. The joy Jesus knew was his
sacrifice on the Cross so that we all could know eternal life. Jesus continued
through His trial to reach His goal; let us press ever forward in our daily
walk towards spiritual maturity. The goal we are all seeking is to spread the
gospel's good news to a lost, dark and dying world.
