John 2:7-9 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
Every
Bible verse or group of verses has multiple messages from God. Consequently, if
we have read a certain passage and believe there is no reason to read it again,
God might just have a new message for us each time we read it. This verse of scripture
is a case in point. The main message that people take from this verse is that
Jesus was able to turn water into wine. Since God created the water and the
fruit of the vine by which the wine was taken from, it was no problem for Him to
turn one into another. This miracle shows the power of God and that a small
gathering in Cana for a wedding is not beyond His caring, His love, and grace.
It
is fascinating to take note of the fact that the master of the banquet did not
witness the miracle itself, of Jesus turning the water into wine. The verse
tells us that he did not even realize where this choice wine had come from. It
was the servants that were blessed with the witnessing of this great miracle. This
is a repeating theme throughout the Bible, where the wealthy and famous do not
get the see the creator of all in heaven and all on earth performing miracle after miracle.
When
the birth of Jesus was first announced, it was not heralded to royalty or to
the titans of businesses, it was announced to the shepherds of the field (Luke
2:8-18). These were people that did not possess great fame or fortune, some of
them carried with them all of their worldly possessions. They were seen as an outcast
to most of society and looked upon with condescension and shunned by many of
the residents of the cities and towns where they spent their lives watching
over the sheep. Jesus would later say that His sheep hear Him and follow Him (John
10:27-28).
Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, God in the flesh, is high in greatness, dignity, and power. He has been given the name above all other names (Philippians 2:9-11). God’s very nature is so far above any creation that it can’t even be comprehended by mere humans. Christ Jesus has respect for what the world considers the lowly, He comforts them with love and cares beyond the noblest and grandest soaring of our imagination. He watches out for every step they take, hears and answers their prayers, and shields them from the fiery darts of Satan. Our Lord and Savior think much of those that do not think highly of themselves, although one might hold oneself low in their own esteem, Christ Jesus holds them high in His esteem (Psalm 138:6; Psalm 147:6; Isaiah 66:2; James 4:6).
