James 3:13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
It is relatively simple to discern understanding in a person, but it is more challenging to distinguish humility in someone. True Godly wisdom and compassion are much more than simple head knowledge; they will display themselves in how we live our lives. Learning and understanding are similar to faith; this humble duo is a virtue that worldly eyes can't see. These qualities will naturally display themselves in how one interacts with the world around them. When people do good deeds to shine the spotlight on themselves, it shows beyond doubt that there is no true wisdom and understanding within their being.
We
can compare Godly wisdom to an untethered horse; the animal can be an enormous
beast and, in its mind, know where it wants to go. When we train the horse to
respond to the bit, it will go where its master wants to go instead of its
desire. It works the same way with us; if we desire true Godly wisdom, we must
be broken of our old life course and led by the Holy Spirit of God.
Wisdom
is the aptitude and capacity to view things from the perspective of God. It is
much more than knowing facts about the Holy Word of God; it is how we use those
facts to allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit instead of charting our course
(1 Corinthians 2:6-8). A Godly demeanor and manner show the source of our good
deeds and work. People around us who are unsaved will notice something
different about how we conduct ourselves, which will lead to golden
opportunities to tell them about the saving grace of our Lord and Savior,
Christ Jesus.
Some
view humility as a weakness; however, Christ's followers know it is God's power
controlling their lives. Therefore, one that is meek from surrendering
themselves to the leading, guiding, and direction of the Holy Spirit does not
look down on others with disrespect and condescension. Followers of Christ know
full well they are who they are only by the grace of God; the truly wise and
meek person knows that all that they have is from God's hand and by no strength
or power of their own (2 Corinthians 10:1; Galatians 6:1; Colossians 3:12).
Wisdom and understanding from God are gifts, and those who possess this knowledge know that their understanding and comprehension of God's Word come from their surrender to the Holy Spirit. How one lives their life will make known who you are in Christ Jesus. Bragging about one's position with Christ has no place in the kingdom of God. The truly surrendered person will be a humble person that loves God and wants to follow His will for their life.
