James 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
As
followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we are in a colossal battle regarding
sin. We have the allures and enticements of Satan attempting to pull us away from
God and His will for our lives. However, we have the only weapon needed to
overcome any inducements or attractions Satan places in front of us, the Holy
Word of God. This moral filth spoken of by James is anything that serves to
separate us from following the light of Christ Jesus and staying in step with
the leading, guiding, and direction of the Holy Spirit. Following the world's
ways and God's will for our lives is unharmonious and conflicting and can't
coexist. This evil and moral filth spoke of here in this verse are all of the
negative habits that we carry over from our old life, outside of Christ Jesus
(Psalms 17:4; Luke 6:45). Our hearts overflow with this moral filth; and evil
because of our Adamic nature (Jeremiah 17:9; Mark 7:21-23). However, notwithstanding,
we have the indwelling of God's Holy Spirit that brings to our lives a new
existence and capability to connect and communicate with God.
We
must radically deal with all sin in our lives; notice James does not say some
sin or any sin but all sin. No sins are lesser or more significant than any
other sin; any sin will hamper our relationship with Christ Jesus.
Consequently, as James instructs us in this verse, we must not try to hide,
excuse, or disguise sin in our lives; we must get rid of it.
God
implants his Word in all that have surrendered their lives to Christ and
accepted Him as their Lord and Savior through the indwelling of God's Holy
Spirit. To receive the Word implanted in us is much more than just listening to
it. Unfortunately, far too many listen to the Word, but it never
becomes a part of who they are (1 Thessalonians 2:13).
Once
this happens, there will be "good soil" by which the Word of God can
grow in the life of the believer (Matthew 13:8). There will then be a
"bumper crop" of virtuous behavior in the life of the one surrendered
to Christ Jesus. But unfortunately, when we take our petitions to the throne of
God, we sometimes pray for protection from earthly dangers instead of purity
simply because we do not see the hazards and perils involved in impurity.
To
humbly accept the Word implanted in us means that we are teachable, which is
vital and imperative in allowing God's Word to change our lives. The
implication for humbly accepting God's Word means that we are open to dealing
with the sin in our lives. When the Word of God is rooted in our lives, the
sanctification process that changes us daily into a more likeness of Christ
Jesus will begin. We will never reach the apex of that journey in this life but
striving for that every day will allow us to have a closer and more personal
relationship with God, which is the only path to an eternity spent with our
Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
