Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Paul was "confident" that God, who began a
good work in the Christians at Philippi, would see it to a conclusion.
Confidence in something means we are confident and convinced of its
authenticity and reality. When God commences His handiwork of salvation in us,
He will see it as a finished product. God will work in and through us, or He
will work on us, but He will never leave a work of His undone. God did the most
He could ever do for us, in and through Christ Jesus, at the point of our
redemption. God did all of this for us, our salvation, even though we were at
enmity with Him. Since He did this for us as His enemies, our human brains can
never imagine the great things that He will do for us now that we are His
friends (John 15:14). This recalls an old gospel song composed by Charles Crozet
Converse and William Bolton entitled "What a Friend We Have in
Jesus."
Even the sincerest believers and followers of Christ
Jesus have at one time or another, experienced anxiety about their status in
their standing with God. The questions that go through our minds at a time like
that are: How can I be sure that I am in God's will? How can I know beyond any
doubt that I have not missed something in my daily walk with Christ Jesus?
Paul's letter to the Philippians is to reassure them and all Christians down
through the ages that God has always been and will always be in control. God is
much more capable of holding on to us than we are of holding on to Him. His
leading of us is much more proficient than our following of Him. We can always
have and know a confident trust that God, who began this good work in us, will
follow it through. No trial or tribulation we will endure will ever take God by
surprise. He is ready, willing, and more than able to lead, guide, and direct
our every step in and through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. (Psalms 11:4).
