Bible Verse of the Day Thursday November 24th, 2022

Matthew 6:22-23 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Physically speaking, the eye is not the light but the receiver of the light; thus, if our physical eyesight is in excellent condition, it will fill us with light. In this case, Jesus is using the eye as a metaphor for spiritual discernment. The idea of healthy eyes here means that we clearly and soundly comprehend the truth of the Word of God. Allegorically speaking, it means that one with "healthy eyes" or a soul and spirit surrendered to Christ Jesus and the truth of His gospel can see and differentiate between good and evil. More importantly, a healthy soul and spirit will look past the evil and desire the good (Proverbs 4:25-27).

The source of all light or truth comes only from God, and when one surrenders to Christ Jesus, they will see all things from God's viewpoint and not the world's outlook. If our vision is somehow impaired, we will not be able to see the light; thus, we will stumble around in the darkness. However, once we realize and accept God's truth that the worldly viewpoint is all dark, God will open our spiritual eyes and fill us with His light.

If we have trouble differentiating between the ditch line and the highway, we will be in severe distress. However, once we focus our entire being on the proper spiritual roadway, God's light will direct our journey so that we might reach our desired objective, which is the full life in Christ, a life eternal (John 10:10). The message that Christ Jesus has for us from this scripture verse is that our spiritual eyes are focused on the Kingdom of God, thus full of light or fixated on the things of this world, shrouded in darkness. The phrase "evil eye" stems from Jewish history when a person coveted something that belonged to their fellow citizen. Furthermore, it indicated one who loved themselves more than those around them.

The thesis of this concept is all about perceptiveness. When we, as followers and believers in Christ, can view any circumstance of life, either good or bad, through the vision of God's promises, the darkness will subside, and the light of God will surround us. But, on the other hand, when we choose to see things through the eyes of the world and leave God out of the reckoning, it will fill us with the darkness of misery, desperation, and despair. However, the good news is there is a reward, not only in this life but our eternal lives; that is ours if we only open our spiritual eyes and see the truth of God's Holy Word. Any natural recompense that comes our way is temporary, and we lose it when our journey here is complete. However, any spiritual rewards we receive will follow us in this life and for all eternity. The greatest reward is earned for us through the love of God, by Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary, the greatest gift of all, eternal life (Romans 6:23).
