Genesis 3:9-10 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid."
One of the first
consequences of the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden was that they
felt like they had to hide when God came to them in the cool of the day. There
has been some debate about exactly when the "cool of the day"
occurred. Considering the history of the Hebrew nation and its culture, it was
in the late afternoon. Charles Spurgeon commented once that it was in the
"wind of the evening when the evening breeze was blowing through the garden."
Likely this was not the first time that the Lord God came to our first parents
walking in the garden. It is exceedingly likely that God came to Adam and Eve
in the person of Christ Jesus because we see throughout scripture that no one
has ever seen God the Father (John 1:18;1 Timothy 6:16; 1 John 4:12; John
6:46).
The fact that Adam and
Eve felt like they had to hide from God indicated they knew that the coverings
they had made for themselves were not sufficient in God's eyes. The same holds
today when we attempt to cover our sins with a shroud of our own making. When
the one that sacrificed His life, that we might have eternal life, comes
seeking us, it would only make sense that we run out to meet Him. Still, as
Adam and Eve attempted to hide from God, we strive towards this futile
exercise. Nevertheless, even though we try to protect ourselves from sin, God
still loves us, and He always wants to have a personal relationship with every
one of His children. Therefore, Father God sent God the Son to find us and
provide the coverage we need to bow before a Holy God. He did this to cover our
sins and remove the cloud of transgression that the shame of sin separates us
from the father, that loves us as no human could imagine. Because of the
sacrifice that our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus made on the Cross of Calvary on
our behalf, we can respond to God's sound when he calls us from the cool of the
garden.
He calls everyone to
respond to His love, grace, and mercy so that through Christ Jesus, all might
come to accept Him as their Lord and Savior and have the gift of eternal life.
Although this is the greatest gift that humankind could ever hope for, there is
another gift, just a grand and marvelous one. When we accept Christ Jesus, our
Lord and Savior, we receive the endowment of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
of God. That means we will never take a step in this life without God's love
and grace guiding and directing our every movement.
