John 3:13 No one has ever gone
into heaven except the one who came from heaven —the Son of Man.
We will focus on the last three
words in this verse, The Son of Man. The verse states: “No one has ever gone
into heaven except the one who came from heaven —the Son of Man.” However, for this commentary, we will look at
the Idea that Jesus, our Lord, Savior, and master, consistently referred to
Himself as The Son of Man. He could have chosen the Son of God because He would
have still described Himself in that phrase. Many other descriptions of Himself
would have been applicable but proper and fitting—the “Everlasting Father, the
Prince of Peace, the Wonderful Counselor,” to name a few.
In the humility and unassuming
nature of Christ Jesus, we can learn a great lesson about the importance of
humility in our own lives. Jesus did not hold any world titles or degrees;
humanly speaking, He would not qualify to join a Seminary today. Too often, we,
as humans, want to flaunt our worldly successes and titles. However, there is a
much sweeter aspect in play here: Jesus loved the world so much that He chose
to identify Himself with humankind, the Son of Man. In doing this, He
pronounces His unanimity and compassion on His people. This simple act of
humility let's all who follow and believe in Him know they can approach Him
without fear.
C. S. Lewis once wrote: “The Son
of God became the Son of Man that the sons of men might become the sons of God.”
Therefore, Jesus was exclusively and uniquely qualified to tell the world of
the things of Heaven because He had been there for all eternity past. There has
never been a human being that has been in an eternal state. Therefore, Jesus
was completely human, and ultimately God was and is an intermediary between
Heaven and earth and God and humankind (1 Timothy 2:5).
Some ask how Jesus could
simultaneously be “in heaven” and on earth. He possessed a divine nature as God
and eternally existed in Heaven while He was on the earth as a human being.
There was a unison and harmony of Jesus’ humanity and His deity that existed
simultaneously. When God spoke to Moses from the burning bush, He did not
separate Himself from Heaven; at every connection of God with humanity, God did
not cease to exist in Heaven.
Christ
Jesus left certain aspects of His deity in Heaven when He came to earth as a
Human. He did not come as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, but He did
come with love, justice, and truth. Jesus did not separate himself from His
deity, but He did limit His inexpressible attributes to perform as an actual
human being (Philippians 2:5-8). Some have attempted to explain Heaven from a
human perspective; however, that cannot happen. Only Christ Jesus, who resided
in Heaven, can thoroughly communicate the reality of Heaven
