Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
The Apostles, together with
the small band of followers of Jesus, most likely prayed for the upcoming event
that Jesus had told them would come about. All through the Book of Acts, we
will see those great things happen when God's people pray, which is still the
case today. They all joined together, indicating that they were of one mind in
carrying out the mission Jesus had left for them. When God does something
great, He places a desire to pray in the heart of His people so they might
prepare themselves for what is to come. The disciples needed the
self-reflection that occurs because of prayer so that they might be ready and
prepared for the great and blessed event that was about to take place, the
coming of the Holy Spirit.
These women mentioned in this
verse were most likely the same women who had been with Jesus as He traveled
His last journey from Galilee to Jerusalem (Luke 8:1-3; 23:49; 23:55; 24:10).
Women involved in gospel work is something that Luke continues to talk about
throughout the Book of Acts. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was among the women
there that day. Please notice that no one prayed to Mary, burnt candles to her,
addressed themselves to her, or requested any blessing from her. Instead, she
was on her knees with the other women and the apostles as they prayed to God.
This incident will be the last time we see Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the
Bible. The brothers of Jesus did not believe in Him while He was on earth (John
7:5), but one of His earthly brothers, James, later became the leader of the
Church in Jerusalem.
Remember that these few
followers and believers in Christ Jesus were in constant Prayer. In Prayer, we
have a unique and exclusive occasion to come close to the Throne of God. If we
are ever to come close to understanding God's heart, Prayer is the only vehicle
that will transport us there. Constantly talking with God will allow us to have
a deeper relationship with God through our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
The world may have dismissed
the Son of Man; however, God's arrangements and purposes for the world will
never be frustrated. The declaration of Christ was not to be hushed by the
Cross, for the Church was to turn into the channel through whom the reality of
the good news of the Gospel of Christ Jesus was to spread throughout the world;
during this Church age, we are in today. What's more, from its introduction to
the world at Pentecost, the Church, which is the Lord Jesus's body, has
conveyed the witness of Christ to a lost, dark, and dying world. Therefore, let
us all, as brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, continue to witness the truth
of the gospel of Christ Jesus in word and deed.
