Bible Verse of the Day Friday April 7th, 2023 (Good Friday)

Mark 9:31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise."

The question in many minds this time of year is what Good Friday is, should we celebrate it, and why is it called Good Friday? We, as Christians, are given freedom in this issue; nonetheless, Romans 14:6 tells us: "Whoever regards one day as unique does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God, and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God." Instead of a one day a year remembrance of the Sacrifice that our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus made on the Cross of Calvary, God's Holy Word instructs us to remember the death of Christ Jesus through observing and celebrating the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11:24-26). Some have questioned why what the Roman Government did to Christ Jesus at the behest of the Jewish leaders was certainly not good, so why is it referred to as Good Friday? However, the result of the substitutionary work on our behalf done by Christ Jesus on the Cross is beyond very good (Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 3:18).

The term "Good Friday" is of debate; some down through the years have contended that it came from another term, "God's Friday." Irrespective of the debate of the origin of "Good Friday," it is wholeheartedly proper and fitting because as horrendous and extreme as the pain, shame, and suffering Jesus endured, it marked a watershed moment in God's plan to save His people (John 3:16). For humanity to receive the good news of the gospel we must first comprehend the bad news of the condition to which we were born into, that of sinful humanity. Therefore, it is imperative for those that wish to follow Christ Jesus and surrender their lives to Him to understand and differentiate the connection between the law and the gospel. The law is necessary because it shows us the hopelessness we live without Christ Jesus. In contrast, the Gospel of Christ Jesus is the vehicle that delivers to us respite and liberation, which leads to our salvation.

On the Cross of Calvary, we see the union of prodigious misery and anguish and God's forgiveness (Psalm 85:10). The Cross is where the mandates of the one true Holy God and His righteousness links with His love, grace, and mercy. This Biblical truth is because Jesus not only willingly but joyfully took upon Himself the divine chastisement and penalty that should have been ours (Hebrews 12:2). Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, endured the shame and pain of the Cross, knowing that it led to His resurrection, our redemption, and deliverance from eternal death and an eternal life with God. Irrespective of the term Good Friday, it is most certainly God's Friday.
