2 Corinthians 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Just
because our eyes see everything in their field of vision does not necessarily
mean we see all there is to see. There will always be much more around us than
we perceive with our human senses; what we fix our eyes on correlates with what
we are experiencing in the present time. What we fix our eyes on relates to
what issues are present to us at any moment. The problem is that these present
issues often hide something of more excellent value, such as eternal life, that
we can only find in God’s Holy Word.
As
followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we should be sensitive to where God is
leading us now. Followers of Christ Jesus should be aware of the more
extraordinary life we could have surrendered fully to the leading of God’s Holy
Spirit. There is no comparison to what this world offers and what God has in
store for those that love Him and surrender themselves to Him, heart, mind,
body, soul, and spirit. The pain and suffering we experience in this life
cannot compare to the glory of eternity spent with the one that loves us as no one
else can, Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.
I am
sure we are all familiar with the Old Testament story of the Servant of Elisha,
that awoke one morning to find enemy military forces lining the hills on all
sides of where they camped (2 Kings 6). The Servant went into full panic mode,
that is, until Elisha prayed and asked God to open the spiritual eyes of his
Servant. When God opened his spiritual eyes, he saw the hills around them
filled with horses and chariots of fire from God all around them. So Elisha
told his Servant that there was more with them than with the enemy that came
against them.
Our
physical senses are not only incomplete, they are unreliable, and they are also
easily fooled by our enemy Satan who will deceive us. That is why those surrendered
to God’s Holy Spirit will have an easier time remaining focused on the fact
that there are more soldiers in God’s army surrounding us than the army of our
enemy, Satan. God is still today ready to open our spiritual eyes so that we
might see the enemy that surrounds us daily. Never rely exclusively on what we
see with our natural eyes; never advance our plans according to what we see
with our natural eyes. In Paul’s words, today, remember “what is seen is
temporary, what is unseen is eternal.
