Bible Verse of the Day Wednesday May 3rd , 2023

2 Peter 2:17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.

The "these people" spoken of in this verse is referring to false teachers. In antiquity, a person that would be traveling long distances in a desert would be on the lookout for a well to quench their thirst and refill their water bags. When they would spot the well from a long distance, the thirsty traveler would look forward to the refreshing water they were about to partake of. When they approached the well and found it dry with no life-giving water, there would be a great disappointment.

Like these dry wells, these false teachers are dry caverns instead of a spring of living water. We seek to learn about the water of life from our bible study and Sunday school teachers, and our pastors. We look forward to great blessings, but from these dry wells, we get only false teachings and more and more lies from the father of lies (John 8:44).

The word "mists" in this verse is taken from the Greek word achlus (AKH-LOOCE), meaning a dimness or darkening. A dimming or darkness often accompanies false teachings because Satan would prefer people to remain in the darkness. False doctrine will bring theories that are supposedly backed up by reputable sources, but in the end, all we find is evil darkness. These dry wells prefer the darkness because they can often hide the falsehoods they are bringing forward. These false precepts are sometimes brought forth in ignorance of the Word of God; people just regurgitating lies heard from another. However, we will most often find that the falsehoods' shaky and unstable foundation have their foundation in pride. Someone who wants people to believe that they have discovered some new reality that has been decoded from the Bible's truth. Since these false teachers and false prophets prefer darkness over light, that is where they shall all spend eternity (Matthew 25:30; Revelation 20:9).

One of the greatest lies from these dry wells of false information is that there is no Hell. Satan would like for everyone to believe that there is no hell, no eternal darkness, and no eternal flames awaiting those that refuse to accept the truth of God's Word over Satan's lies. The New Testament writers recorded Jesus speaking of Hell in many places in the Bible (Matthew 13:28-42, 10:28, 25:46), to mention only a few. If Hell's truth is denied, then the truth of the Word of God, in the person of Christ Jesus, is being denied as well.

Obstinate and Stubborn false teachers of Satan fabricate and fashion their own brand of religion. They assert that they speak with authority, but what they keep hidden is that their authority comes from Satan's evil. These dry wells are in stark contrast to the living well of eternal water that we have been promised by our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus (John 4:13-14).
