Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.
The
cause of humanity's descent to the lowermost pit of immorality is a lack of
knowledge of God. A lack of information does not cause this. Unlike when it
took some extended searching to find the Word of God, it is available today at
our fingertips. The internet has made it possible to have a choice of numerous
Bible apps on our cell phones to access 24/7. When the prophet Hosea penned
these words, the Nation of Israel was enjoying its most successful economic
period. Still, they had forgotten that this was all a blessing from God and was
giving the credit for their prosperity to foreign gods. God had not lost His
love, grace, or strength for His children; they lacked basic knowledge of who
God is and what He had done for them and could continue to do for them in the
future.
The
same is true today, especially in the United States, where the "American
dream" has become a contest to see who can compile the most enormous and
vast fortune. What kind of knowledge did the people in Hosea's day lack, and
what wisdom is lacking today? The answer is the same: a lack of understanding
of God (Hosea 4:1). When we focus on today's idols, fame, fortune, sporting
celebrities, etc., we move further and further away from God. Similarly, during
Hosea's ministry, the people in the nation of Israel were enjoying great
monetary success and moving away from God. People sometimes get to the point
where they think they know everything about God they need to know. Contrary to
popular belief, that point is unattainable in this life.
God
told the people of Hosea's day that because they had ignored His Law, He would
reject their children. Remember, God has no grandchildren; each generation is
responsible for ourselves to seek a close relationship with our Lord and
Savior, Christ Jesus. In case, by this point in reading this commentary, you
are thinking, ", Well, I'm in the clear because this verse says that
because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests, and I'm
not a priest or preacher" (1 Peter 2:9). Every follower and believer in
Christ Jesus are ministers of the Gospel, the final call left to all of us by
Jesus when He ascended back to the glory of heaven was that we all should
spread the Gospel to the entire world (Acts 1:8).
There
is a clear and concise connection between having a close personal relationship
with Christ Jesus and knowing God's Holy Word. Some think Bible study is
tedious and can't find time to study the Word of God in their busy schedules.
When God sought out an expression, a representation of who He is and what His
nature consists of, He chose to call Himself "The Word" (John 1:1
& 14).
All
that God has promised in His Holy Word will happen when we are willing to wait
through faith for His response (Isaiah 55:11). God has given us His Holy Word
so we might follow His perfect will for our lives and stay in His Holy Word
that we will be able to discover His calling, and some great and beautiful
things that will change our lives to the point that we can't imagine before
this marvelous and wonderful discovery.
