Romans 4:19-20 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God.
When we believe in the wonderful
promises from God in John 3:16, that God promised us eternal life, without
knowing anything about eternal life, that's placing our faith and trust in
God's Word. When we claim 1 Peter 5:7 that God will free us from all anxiety,
that is trusting God at His Word and believing in His promises. The one thing
that we can rest assured of is that God will never fall short of one of His
promises to His children.
Faith does not disregard the
facts but sees past them. It is no avoidance from reality, nor is it having
faith in faith alone. Authentic faith always stands on the points of the
promises of God. Consequently, faith understands the facts but sees far ahead
of them. Abraham evaluated the unambiguous facts that he and Sarah were too old
to even think about having a child. However, God said they would bring a child
into the world, and Abraham trusted God to be true to His word. There is no
value in faith itself, but only what faith believes; self-delusion has no
benefit. It was about twenty-five years from when God made a promise to Abraham
and when Isaac was born, but Abraham's faith remained strong that God would
keep His promise.
Abraham recognized and accepted
the demonstration of God's power to do what He said He would do. Abraham
harbored no doubts of the power of God. You and I stand in a contingent and
trusting relationship with God. Our faith brings glory to God before a lost,
dark, and dying world because it professes our trust in God's trustworthiness.
We can never bring glory to God short of our faith that his word is accurate,
and we can always place our faith and trust in His promises found in His Holy
Word. We can always trust in the truth that God will never change his mind; he
will never promise one thing one day and the opposite of that the next day.
Faith is in no way an indefinable
impulse; true faith believes in the promises of God, the circumstances
notwithstanding. Our faith stands upon God and the truth of His Word; that is
the only thing we can build our faith upon. Sadly, too many Christians
fluctuate between doubt and faith. When our sailing is smooth, and the wind has
filled our sails, we trust God; however, when we experience a storm or the wind
has died down, and we are getting nowhere fast, we begin to foster doubt. We
will all experience some strain in our faith from time to time. However, a
struggling faith is not equivalent to a lack of faith. The dark valleys we will
go through from time to time will stand to prove the genuineness of our faith
in God. Faith is in no way an indefinable impulse; true faith believes in the
promises of God, the circumstances notwithstanding.
