Colossians 3:16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Sometimes in our lives, we sing;
at times we only sing in our hearts. We sing when happiness abounds or when
something has broken our hearts. To say our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, is
worthy of all our praise and thankfulness is an understatement of extraordinary
dimension. However, the rock-solid foundation for all our singing is the good
news of the gospel of Christ Jesus. No greater exaltation could exist than
knowing that we have eternal life through His sacrifice on the Cross of
Calvary. When that truth completely controls our lives, hearts, and souls, we
can show nothing short of full exaltation. There are abounding blessings that
God bestows upon our lives, the love of our family and friends, but the
greatest blessing comes because of the beautiful assurance we have of a life
eternal spent with Christ Jesus,
Some say, “I just do not
understand what I read in the Bible.” The comprehension of the Word of God does
not come to us in one glorious flash. We gradually glean it from a day-by-day
reading and studying His Word. There is no pastor out there who is unwilling to
sit down with you and help you better understand the Word of God. A Cross above
my desk in my home office reads: “Good morning, this is God; I will be handling
all your problems today.” When I come to a certain point in His Word that I may
not be clear about, I look up at that Cross, bow my head for a moment or two in
prayer, and thank Him for all His blessings. God intentionally created the
lives of Christians to depend on other Christians to aid and assist us in
applying His Word in our personal lives.
Jesus defeated Satan during his
time in the wilderness with only one weapon, the Word of God (Matthew 4:4-10);
it has always been fascinating to me that if you remove the letter “S” from the
word “Sword,” all that remains is the “Word”, that is the Sword of the Spirit.
During an attack by Satan, we cannot tell the evil one to wait until we have
time to consult God’s Word; it would be advantageous for us always to be ready
and prepared to use the only weapon that is useful against Satan, God’s Word.
When we come to the point in our
lives that studying God’s Word is as natural to us as breathing, He will always
give us the correct verse of scripture for any situation we encounter. When
Satan tempts us to say something adversarial or confrontational to someone or
to speak ill of another person, a verse of scripture will come up on the
monitor of our souls and allow us to escape whatever share or trap Satan has
set for us. When we allow the Word of God to be our guiding light, we will
discover less room for the unworthy aspects of life in our hearts and souls.
The solution is simple: do not let a day go by that God’s Word is not at the
forefront of our beings.
