Hebrews 5:7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
Jesus is the one intercessor
between God and humankind. He is the eternal God, the perfect human who died
for our sins and rose again on the third day. Jesus is the one mediator
connecting God and fallen humanity, seated on the right hand of God, and ever
lives to make intercession for all people who believe in His name. When our
enemy, Satan, accuses us before God's throne, it is Christ Jesus who stands in
the gap. He is the One that defends us and mediates on our behalf.
From Chapter 3 of Hebrews to
Chapter 5, verse 10, God gives some significant details and attributes about
the person and work of Christ Jesus. He is our faithful and loving High Priest.
He was tempted in the same manner we are but did not sin, becoming the supreme
sacrifice for our sinful nature. He is the Lamb of God, from the foundation of
the world, born to sacrifice His life on Calvary, who takes away the world's
sin.
In this part of the writings
in Hebrews, the Bible warns of the hazards of unbelief while reminding us that
God the Father appointed the Lord Jesus to His preeminent position, where He
serves as our eternal High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. Unlike Aaron,
whose priesthood was restricted, lesser, and temporary, Jesus's high priesthood
is permanent, immensely superior, and will last for eternity.
God the Father gave His only
begotten Son to be the newborn baby, coming into the world as the sacrifice for
all sin. Furthermore, the Lord Jesus Himself gave His life as a free-will
offering and oblation, out of love for the Father and us, to pay the debt for
the world's sin. Christ Jesus perfectly illustrated how to live a holy life of
active dependence on God the Father while He was on the earth. His life was
lived by faith, teaching only the things God the Father taught and living
according to the life set aside by the Father. His life was based on humility
and is a perfect pattern for us to follow here on earth. Jesus' humble
obedience led to His death on the Cross of Calvary and His declaration to the
world and the Father that "Your will not Mine be done for Your honor and
glory." He did everything the Father told Him to do willingly. Jesus
actively depended on the Father and lived in spirit and truth moment by moment.
He continued in fellowship,
received guidance, and was given instruction and power from God the Father. He
came to fulfill His Father's will. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane and on
the Cross. Christ's perfect life was one of prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and
worship. The prayers and supplications He spoke in the garden and on the Cross
served as a sacrificial offering to His Father and were complemented by strong
cries and tears.
