John 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
There is a story about a man
watching his son playing with a toy. The toy was not working correctly, and the
man couldn't help but laugh. The father offered to help his son with the toy,
but he refused and said, "I've got it." The son struggled with the
toy, trying to get it to work by pushing, pulling, twisting, and turning it.
However, nothing seemed to work, and soon, he dropped the toy in his lap and
said, "Daddy, fix it."
As Jesus found this man lying by
the pool, He knew what He was facing. He knew that this man had been there for
many years. Jesus didn't have to ask the man if he was in trouble or had a
problem. He already knew. Instead, Jesus looked at the man and said: "Will
you let me fix it?" So many times, we want to try to hold on to doing
things our way. We will try every angle and every way we can think of. Many
times, we make a bigger mess than we were in. Instead, maybe we should learn
that little phrase, "Father, will you fix it?" It can be challenging
to let go or trust. But when we do, it allows God to do something in our lives
that we cannot do on our own.
We may have tried everything and
looked everywhere. Whatever the pool that we are looking to for healing, we
haven't found it. We may have tried the doctors, counselors, spiritualists, or
even the Church and not yet found the healing we seek. We might be looking to
the pool, but we need the savior. We may even be Christians seeking healing
from a particular illness or sin. For years, we have been asking Jesus to heal
us our way, to help us get to the pool, instead of just giving the problem to
him. If that is the condition we find ourselves in today, then Jesus is ready
and able to heal.
Across the world, some Christians
need encouragement and strength that only God's word can provide. We should
focus on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships
with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
