Exodus 3:3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”
There is something that fascinates us about fire, and there is
nothing like a crackling fire in our fireplaces at home. Most people like
sitting around an open campfire roasting marshmallows. Some of us remember
using a wood stove to keep our houses warm when the temperature outside was
very low. We all learned from our parents and older relatives the importance of
fire safety because if it gets out of control, it can damage property or cause
massive injury and, in more severe cases, cause death.
We can only imagine what
Moses must have felt when he witnessed a bush on fire not being consumed. He
had, without a doubt, seen fire during his lifetime. However, this was a new
experience for this man of God. The fire should have consumed the bush;
however, God was feeding the fire and not the bush.
We often say that a
Christian has a fire burning in their heart. But one thing about a fire is that
it will die without being fed. The fire needs wood and oxygen to continue
burning. Similarly, our hearts need constant feeding from God to keep the fire
burning.
How is your fire? Many Christians are starving their
fire, not allowing God to feed them and use them. But God wants to keep the
fire burning, which should also be our desire. To keep the fire burning, we
can't feed it with the things of this world. We need to feed it with the things
of God!
I'm sure that Moses had
many questions in his heart and only a few answers. All he knew to do was take
the next step, live the next day, and wait for God to make the next move. On
this day, in the heat of the day, as the sun shone high in the sky, God was
about to make his move and change Moses's life forever. I am sure that as
Christians, we have all wondered why God has us where we are right now. I am
sure there has been a time in all Christian lives when we question why God has
us where he has us at a particular time. Then, we wonder what God has in store
for us next.
Sometimes, it seems that
it takes God a long time to move on our behalf. That's why so many people end
up in trouble spiritually. We are people who need more patience. We are people
who want our answers, and we want them now. "God, if you have something
for me to do, then show me and let me get going right now." How often do
we fail to wait upon the Lord, or to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, and
go off on our understanding, only to find our plans have been shipwrecked in
the circumstances in the seas of our lives? We need to develop patience and
learn to wait upon the Lord.
