Psalm 141:4 Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies.
Most Christians raised in the
church have recited the Lord's Prayer from a very young age. Although the Bible
meant it as a model for prayer, many people also used it to teach young people
good prayer habits. One specific place in the Lord's prayer will catch our
attention: "Lead us not into temptation."
Temptation is powerful, and the
concept of temptation is nothing new. Many of Jesus' followers knew a lot about
temptation, and so did David. We all know stories about his life and how he
faced temptations. More than just facing them, he also gave in to them many
times.
David learned a lot about
temptation in his life. However, this is especially true of the first phrase of
this verse in Psalm 141, which has nearly the same meaning as the statement in
the Lord's Prayer. The idea is that God would help him so that he did not fall
into circumstances of temptation.
It can be easy to talk about
fleeing temptation when not facing it. Many Christians boldly proclaim they can
reject temptations when not facing them. But when times get challenging, when
circumstances become difficult, it can be easy to give in. That's why it is
essential to protect ourselves from situations of temptation. We may find
ourselves in those moments when we think the slightest temptation will not
matter. If we give in just once, no one will ever know. The truth is that if we
give in once, it becomes easier. The temptations grow, and soon, we will find
our hearts away from God.
Instead of giving in to
temptations, say the same prayer as David today. Ask God to help protect us
from situations of temptations and to help keep our hearts from the places
where we may be weakest. It won't remove temptation from our lives, but it can help
us overcome those where we are most susceptible.
Temptation is a fact of life for everyone,
Christians and non-Christians alike face temptation. As Christians, we must
overcome temptation, which is not sinful. But giving in to temptation is a sin,
and if we are going to live a victorious Christian life, if we are going to
successfully pursue our quest of a lifetime of growing closer to the Lord
through the power of the Holy Spirit, let us be thankful that God's Word has
much to say about temptation.
