23rd psalm The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
My Father passed away on July 4th, 2004, and every year that holiday stands as a reminder of his passing. We all have certain days even if they are not some holiday that brings back the painful memories of the loss of one of our loved ones. One writer once called these days “Sentimental Land Mines” and they are much harder on the family and friends when they fall on a holiday or a wedding anniversary, birthday or another meaningful important day in our lives.

It is advised by psychologist and other counselors that taking some progressive action may help us cope with our feelings of emptiness and loss.
These might be holding a family reunion on that day to celebrate the life of our loved one or giving a commemorational donation, that would benefit others while at the same time bringing honor to the memory of our loved one that has gone home to be with the Lord. But these will only serve as a temporary cover for the feelings of grief and depression. The deep healing of our spirit can come only from God, only He can bring lasting comfort and peace to our lives.
The 23rd Psalm is and always will be a great comfort to all of us during times of depression and grief. Everyone is somewhat familiar with this soothing verse of scripture. This passage of comfort rings out to us that “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life”. It does not say just one day it clearly tells us “all of the days” of our lives.
You may think that you have heard or read this Psalm many times before, but God has a fresh new message for you each time you read a verse of scripture. Try reading this Psalm over again with an open heart and mind to what God is trying to tell you. When we experience these “Sentimental Land Mines” know that our Loving Shepherd is there to protect, guide and comfort us during all of the painful days we find ourselves going through.
The most affectionate encounter of the Love of God will be experienced during these times of mourning and grief.
