Hebrews 11:13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.
On a few occasions over the years, Linda and I have visited Cass Railroad in West Virginia and rode the train up to the top of Cass Mountain. This is an old logging steam train and the trip was very exciting. There were a few “switchbacks” that we went through where the train had to stop and go back in the opposite direction. When this happened, the train did not turn around the engine would push the train instead of pulling it which meant that the train was actually going backward, you could see where you had been instead of where you were going.
We experience the same thing in our everyday lives as well; there are times that we would like to see where we are going instead of where we have been. We think how great it would be if we could find out in advance how particular circumstances that we have offered up a prayer for would turn out. Because of faith, we are able to see not only where we have been but where we are going.
Hebrews chapter 11 which is known as “The Faith Chapter” gives us the account of some of God’s people from the Old Testament that did see ahead because of faith. “They only saw them and welcomed them from a distance”. In verse 22 we see Joseph talking about the Exodus of the Children of Israel from slavery in Egypt 400 years before it happened, by faith he was able to see ahead. In verse 7 it speaks of Noah being “warned about things not yet seen” was able to see ahead to the great flood. Verse 27 tells us the by faith Moses “saw him who is invisible” meaning Christ. These people were “longing for a better country, a heavenly one”
Of course, we can’t always know in advance just how God will intervene in our situations and bless our lives during the hardships and trials we must endure. We are able to see ahead by faith where we are going. There is a line in the Gospel Song “Beulah Land” that says, “I’m looking now across that river where my faith will turn to sight.” We can be assured that ahead of us is a Heavenly Home where we will abide with our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus for eternity.
There is a blessed eternal hope that we as children of God have and that is we can “See Ahead” to the promise of God of an eternal home in Heaven.
