Matthew
6:31-32 So do
not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What
shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly
Father knows that you need them.
There has been a lot of downsizing
and layoffs in all fields of employment in our country and throughout the world
over the past several years. A lot of people are finding themselves without any
income and what looks like no hope of finding gainful employment. Each and
every one of us knows someone this has happened to or has someone in our family
that is in this boat. Panic is a normal reaction when we find ourselves faced
with difficult times, maybe the loss of a job, a family member with cancer or
someone in our family that is far away from God.
We pray and ask for the
prayers of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, we occupy our time with
what we believe to be a productive plan of action. Then we still worry, knowing
full well that it is of no real value to us. We are confident that we should
place all of our faith and trust in our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, but it
is still human nature to question just what God is doing to help us out of
these difficult times.
There is an old saying that
every long journey begins with the first step, there are some steps that we can
take that will lead us to completely trusting in God for the answer we seek
during these trying times. The first step is to understand the truth from God’s
perspective. The word of God is truth and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).
The next step is to find these
wonderful promises of God that abound in His word that He will provide for your
every need, if only we will trust Him and place all of our burdens upon Him (1 Peter 5:7; Philippians 4:19).The
final step is to believe that the Word of God is truth and that He will “never
leave or forsake us” (Hebrews 13:5)
and that He will keep all of His promises. We can with bold confidence as the
old hymn states “Stand on the Promises of God”. Worry is not only a waste of
our time, but it is a weight that God does not mean for us to bear (Matthew 6:34).
