The Beatitudes Part IV of VIII
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
There is another way this verse could be phrased. "Blessed
are those who do not seek after their own righteousness through works but seek
after the righteousness of God through our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. The
hunger described here is a profound hunger that cannot be satisfied with
horderves; it requires a full complete meal. The ones described in this verse
by Jesus are those that hunger and thirst for the righteousness of God, His
Holy Word, and His presence in their daily lives through the Holy Spirit's
indwelling.
This attitude can come only in a life that loves God, and a heart
and soul belief that it is only through God's grace and mercy that we are
saved. It can only be present in those that do not seek after works for
self-righteousness, but who genuinely want to follow the leading, guiding and
direction of the Holy Spirit, that indwells in every follower and believer of
Christ Jesus.
Along with our salvation comes some wonderful blessings from God;
included in these blessings are spiritual gifts that can be used in our service
to our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. Each believer has a specific spiritual
gift, one that fits our own personality and specific to our own calling of
Christ Jesus. Our good works come from these gifts given to us by God, used for
God's honor and glory, and to spread the Gospel of Christ Jesus throughout the
world, because of our love for God. The Bible is unambiguously clear that it is
not our goodness that will get us into heaven, only the righteousness of Christ
Jesus, that was freely given through His substitutionary work on the Cross of
Calvary, and our acceptance of Him as our Lord and Savior.
This verse, or beatitude, also includes a pang of hunger and
thirst for God's will in our lives. The only way we can be sure that we are
following God's will, for our lives, is always to follow the leading and
guiding of the Holy Spirit, that indwells in every believer of Christ Jesus.
This will bring about our good works as a natural by-product of our faith and
trust in Christ. Additionally, this will become a witness of our love for God
to all the people we come into contact with.
Jesus said that those that do seek after the righteousness of God
will be filled. This is a meticulous type of filling that only God could provide;
on the one hand, it satisfies us and keeps us longing for more. Those who seek
after God's righteousness will be filled now, through the Holy Spirit's
indwelling, the study of God's Holy Word and prayer. This filling will find it
is completeness when we are face to face with Our Lord and Savior, Christ
Jesus. What a glorious day that will be.
The foundation of our Christian
life is built on the bedrock of the truth that Christ Jesus did not give us
what we deserved but showed us grace and mercy. In turn we should not give
others what they deserve but show the love, kindness, grace and mercy of our Lord
and Savior Christ Jesus.
