John 4:11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
Christ Jesus came to this earth as a human
being through Abraham, Issac, and Jacob's genealogical line to the lost flock
of Israel. However, He did not come to save the Jewish people only; He came as
the Savior of the world, Jew and Gentile alike. Every human being was afforded
the chance to drink from His "living Water" to obtain forgiveness of
sin and life eternal.
In the opening months of His earthly
ministry, the Jewish people's leaders, the Pharisees, and Sadducees had begun
to resent Jesus. John the Baptist had introduced Jesus to the world as the Lamb
of God, the Savior of the world, and many were following Jesus. Jesus did not
immerse Himself in the popularity He was gaining, He chose to go back to
Galilee, where He would be less prominent.
The long grueling walk from Jerusalem to
Galilee ran through Samaria, and most Jewish people would avoid going through a
Land they considered filled with counterfeit Jews. The Jews avoided any contact
with the Samaritans, and Jewish men would never give a Samaritan woman a second
glance, let alone carry on a conversation with her. Jesus did not avoid Samaria
but walked the hot, dusty path that ran right through the dreaded land of Samaria.
When Jesus sat down at a well given by
Jacob at Sychar about noon, the hottest part of the day, His disciples went
into the city to procure some food. A woman from the village came out to draw
water from the well and found Jesus sitting there. The fact that the woman was
drawing her water in the hottest part of the day instead of the cool of the
morning or late evening would indicate that she was an outcast from her
community.
Jesus told her about a living water that
she confused for physical water, asking Jesus how he was going to draw water
without a rope and a bucket. She told Jesus that she knew the Messiah was
coming that would reveal everything to them. Jesus said to her that she was
speaking to the true promised Messiah.
