2 Corinthians 6:2 For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
Paul is applying a message
that came from the Prophet Isaiah to instill a sense of urgency in the
Christians at Corinth, and all saved born again believers in Christ Jesus down
through the ages (Isaiah 49:8). The "day of Salvation"
mentioned in this verse is the time allotted by God to surrender our lives to
Christ Jesus. The Prophets of the Old Testament looked forward in time to when
the Promised Messiah would come to take away the sins of the world. That day
came when Jesus was born, but the Children of Israel, the descendants of
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, rejected their Lord and Savior.
This message from the Apostle
Paul was to counter the Judaizers and legalists in Corinth not to receive God's
grace through Christ Jesus in vain (2 Corinthians 6:1). The verse in
Isaiah was in the context of the return of the Children of Israel from their
seventy (70) year captivity in Babylon. Paul applied this prophecy from Isaiah
to the Christians at the Corinthian Church and to all that would accept Christ
Jesus from that point forward. The Prophet Isaiah's underlying message is that
God would bring about salvation for the Jewish people and Gentiles as well (Isaiah
49:6). The time of God's favor and the day of salvation is the time period
that the Grace of God is poured out to all that are willing to accept Christ
Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This time is now when the Prince of Darkness is
roaming around seeking all that he might devour.
In this verse (2
Corinthians 6:2), there are two warnings; the first one is, "he
says," and the second is "I tell you." The former referring to
the Prophet Isaiah's message, and the latter is Paul's warning that the Day of
Salvation will not last forever. The critical warning here is that we do not
know when that time period will end (Matthew 24:36). We hear people
saying that the second coming is very close, especially in these trying times we
are living in today. No one can tell us when that will be, but as sure as the
sunrise will occur in the morning, it is closer today than it was yesterday,
and it will be closer tomorrow than it is today.
The urgency of the second
coming of Christ Jesus should spur and motivate all Christians to carry out the
only reason we are left here one second after our salvation. That reason was
clearly spoken by Jesus at His ascension back to heaven at the end of His
earthly ministry (Acts 1:8). It is the responsibility of all saved, born
again, washed in the blood, followers, and believers in Christ Jesus to carry
out that calling of Jesus. Some falsely believe that it was meant for the
Apostles only while others say it is a directive for pastors, evangelists, and
missionaries. However, the calling to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth
is everyone's responsibility that, through faith, has accepted Christ Jesus as
their Lord and Savior.
