God's Christmas Gift: Part III (It Showed the Great Love of God)
Matthew 1:18-23 This is how the birth of Jesus the
Messiah came about His mother Mary was pledged to be married to
Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the
Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did
not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her
quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to
take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy
Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to
fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will
conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means
“God with us”).
God shows His great love for us through the gift of our salvation and eternal life with Him. Jesus, who was God in the Flesh, went to the Cross, went through the torture of a Roman Scourging, carrying His Own Cross to the place of execution, and died there on the Hill of Calvary so that we can spend eternity with Him. The God of Heaven, the creator of all Heaven and earth, stepped out of eternity and took on humanity for one reason, and that was so we might be with Him throughout all eternity.
Jesus,
who is fully God, proclaimed and worshipped by angels who were created by Him,
left the perfect environment of Heaven, and stepped into broken, fallen
humanity. Moreover, Jesus came to us in the most humble and modest of means; He
did not come to the earth as he was, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
He came so very humbly; He never had anything
or owned anything. He did not even have a place to lay His head (Luke 9:58).
He did so, knowing His only reason for coming was to experience humanity so
that He could identify with us and take our place on the Cross of Calvary.
Jesus knew that only sinless humanity could take the place of sinful humanity.
There is no extent of good deeds that can wipe away human sin, only the blood
of Christ Jesus (1 John 1:7; Psalm 51:2; Isaiah 1:18). All the blood of
all the animals ever sacrificed cannot erase human sin. Only another person
that is without sin can stand in as a substitute for us.
The Bible tells us that Jesus was slain from the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20; Revelation 13:8). We were in His thoughts long before humans came into being. Jesus, before the universe ever existed, knew us and planned to leave Heaven and give His life for us.
He
did this so that through our faith in Him, we could spend eternity in His
presence. The plan of redemption from God was in place from the very beginning.
And His free-gift of salvation was always His plan of redemption, through which
He has shown us the overwhelming love He has for us, especially during this
Christmas season.
