God's Christmas Gift: Part IV (It Came to Us in Humility)

Matthew 1:18-23 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.  Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

The gift God has given us came to the world in the most-humble of wrappings. Christ Jesus came to the earth to save the world from its sin. He did not come to live like a King or elevate himself, although He is the King of Kings. He did not come to enjoy the best that the world has to offer, even though He created the world. Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus was born into the world to take our place on the Cross at Calvary to die for our sins so that we can spend eternity with Him.

Those that have placed their faith and trust in Christ Jesus and have accepted Him, not only as their Savior but as their Lord as well, will spend eternity in His glorious presence. When Christ Jesus ushers in the "New Heaven and The New Earth," only those whose names are recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life will be present with Him.

Jesus is the ultimate and supreme display of the Love of God and genuine humility. Jesus, the Author of Creation, the eternal God of Heaven, stepped out of eternity and took on humanity. And though sovereign and omnipotent, He humbled Himself to the death on the Cross for all people. Jesus died to reconcile sinful humanity back to a Holy God. Our Lord and Savior came to bear our sins in the humblest of ways and by the lowliest of means so that by faith, we may become children of God.

With the most incredible display of love for us, He stood before us, taking on our guilt and our punishment on the Cross. A penalty we could never pay, and a sentence we could not take upon ourselves. Jesus did this so we can experience God's love for us in our day to day lives. And not only in our day-to-day lives but also in God's continuing love for us during the eternity we will spend with Him. God's gift to humanity, the ultimate gift of eternal life through His Son, Christ Jesus, came in the simplest and humblest of wrappings.

We need to remember the fall of humankind brought with it division and alienation from God. Our sin-nature places us in conflict with God because it puts us at enmity against God. However, because of the greatest of all Christmas gifts, the gift of Eternal Life, we can become Children of God, adopted into His Royal Family, and become Joint-heirs with Jesus in God's Eternal Kingdom.
