1 Corinthians 2:2-3 I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.
The city of Corinth was rich in
distinguished lecturers and scholarly philosophers. Someone's standing in
Corinth depended on their academic ability, educational expertise,
knowledgeable stature, and debating skills in Corinth. When the Apostle Paul
arrived in Corinth, he decided that he would not bring the gospel message with
extravagant words or persuasive arguments. He further determined not to attempt
to display great wisdom or doctrinally credible language. Paul went into
Corinth being led by the Holy Spirit of God, carrying nothing with him except
the knowledge of the sacrifice that Christ Jesus had made on the Cross of
Calvary.
Paul's educational background was
equivalent today to an advanced Ph.D. in Theology. He was as educationally
sophisticated as all of the philosophers in Corinth and, in some cases, more
innovative. He had studied under some of the greatest Rabbis in Jewish history,
including Gamaliel, the famous Rabbi Hillel grandson.
Paul did not come to these
supposable learned Greek philosophers with an opinionated, imperious attitude.
He shared the Gospel of Christ Jesus in plain and simple terms as he taught
them that God came to the earth in human form as Christ Jesus to save the world
from their sins. Paul further explained that Christ Jesus took upon Himself the
punishment for the sins of the world. He made it clear that anyone who believed
in Christ Jesus, that is, He was the true promised Messiah, would never die but
have eternal life (John 3:16).
Paul had learned that Human wisdom was
foolishness in God's eyes (1 Corinthians 3:19), but in His strength, we can
preach that because of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus, death
has no sting (1 Corinthians 15:55). Our strength
does not depend on our worldly wisdom, but in the truth found in God's Holy
Word. We do not need an extensive training course on Muslims to be a witness
for Christ to Muslims. Similarly, it is not required for us to have a Ph.D. in
philosophy to talk to philosophers about Christ Jesus's grace. Furthermore, to
tell the scientific world about the Cross's power and the Resurrection of
Christ Jesus, we will not be required to have a doctoral degree in applied
science.
The salvation of all souls is based solely on the Cross of Calvary's power, not on any human being's oratory ability. Conviction in the power of the Word of God and the indwelling of His Holy Spirit will lead us to the words to Share Christ Jesus; self-assurance will cause us to stumble. The power is in the seed and not the sower.
