Job 23:12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.
Psalm 119:148 My eyes stay open through the watches of the
night, that I may meditate on your promises.
There have been
statements made that “I don’t worry about going to hell, I’ll be too busy
shaking hands with all my friends.” In reality, folks will be busy with “weeping
and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13:50). Hell is a place where “the worms
that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:48). And
“they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full
strength into the cup of his wrath.
They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11).
There was a court case
not too long ago in which the American Atheist had filed a lawsuit in Federal
court claiming that the United States did not have any holidays for the
atheist. They say that Christians, Muslims, Jews, and most all religions have
legal holidays. They wanted to force the country to name a holiday for Atheists.
The judge threw the case out of court; in his written opinion, he stated that
there was already a holiday for the atheist, it occurs every April 1st, April’s
Fools Day. This story is most likely fiction, but it makes an excellent point
that only a fool would want to go to hell. Where the rubber meets the road, it
is more probable that even those that say they want to go to hell do not mean
it. When the end of the day comes, and they are trying to get to sleep thinking
about what the hereafter will bring, Heaven lays heavy on their minds.
Now that we have
determined that God’s glorious Heaven is the destination of choice for all, but
the most devout fools let us look at how prepared we are for that eternal
journey. Remembering that all things physical will be of no consequence, all
the worldly riches that we spent countless hours, days, and years accumulating
will be left behind with the expulsion of our last breath (Matthew 6:20).
Countless individuals do not have time for Christ and His work. “I am so young; I’ll get busy for Jesus when I am a little older.” Then the pre-teen and teen years fade into the twenties and thirties. “I am so busy with my career, my family, trying to pay my mortgage and build a college fund; I’ll have more time to spend for Jesus when I retire. Then like a lightning flash in the night, the twenties and thirties suddenly become the fifties and sixties, and retirement is a new Winnebago, golf courses and winters spent in Florida trying to land that big Marlin we have always dreamed of.
If one does not care about getting to know Christ Jesus personally and surrendering our life to His will instead of our plans and dreams in this life, what makes us think it will suddenly change in the hereafter. There is only one way to get to know Christ on a level that we can call Him friend, and He replies in kind. That is through God’s Holy Word. How much time do we spend daily immersed in the truth of the Bible? Not just reading a few Psalms or some verses at random, but in-depth Bible study and prayer.
Here are a few facts
and figures to chew on at the end of this article. There are 168 hours in a
week; if someone spends 30 minutes a day in Bible study, that is approximately
2% of your time.
In comparison with eternity, the time we have here is such a micro-percentage part of the time with no end that it cannot be computed even by the greatest minds, helped by the most complicated computers. It only makes sense that we should be focusing on what we will be doing from the time we exit this life through eternity. The Bible does not tell us precisely what we will be doing in Heaven, but Heaven is all about Christ Jesus.
When we stand before
our Savior, we all long to hear, “well done my good and faithful servant” (Matthew
25:21), not “depart from me I never knew you” (Matthew 7:23).
