1 John 2:7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing, and the true light is already shining.
Our love for other people should be a duplication of
God's love towards us in Christ Jesus. Even though we are all sinners, hostile
to God, and with no hope of eternal life, Christ Jesus left His glory above,
came to Earth to die a cruel death on the Old Rugged Cross to pay a sin debt
for us we could never pay. The love that Christ Jesus has for us is far above any
human love that we might hold for our loved ones here on this Earth. The love
that our Lord and Savior demonstrate towards us will only be evident in the
lives of faithful followers and believers in Christ Jesus. The case is not that Jesus does not love every human
being, because He does. However, it is only through the power of the Holy
Spirit's indwelling that anyone will truly experience the love and grace of God
that comes only through salvation. Without the Holy Spirit's indwelling, the
things of God will seem foolish to the ones that live for the world (1
Corinthians 2:14).
Jesus was not giving the world a new message of love; Love
of God has always been and will always be. The command Jesus was referring to
was something that all believers had known from the heartbeat of their
Salvation. The way
we will know that we are faithful followers and believers in Christ Jesus is
the love we hold for our fellow brothers and sisters (1 John 2:9-11).
If we pattern our love for others after the precepts of
God's Word, it indicates that we are walking in the light, as Jesus is in the
light (1 John 1:7). The love that the world promotes is conditional; I
love you because you do this or that for me. Once the other person fails to do
"this or that," the love dissipates. When the love disintegrates, the
light of Christ that is showing the way will slowly dim and soon turn to
darkness. . As long as we remain in Christ Jesus, He will remain
in us (John 15:4), and
His light will enable our lives to be rewarding and effective in spreading His
gospel to the ends of the Earth.
