Ephesian 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,
In our
modern world today, the "heart" is thought of as the primary center
of our passions and feelings. However, in the world of antiquity, especially
the Greek and Hebrew cultures, the heart was seen as the center of Knowledge,
understanding, thinking, and wisdom. The heart in biblical times meant the
substance of life that instigates contemplations. The Gathering of information
is on the opposite end of the spectrum as perception or awareness. We could
possess massive amounts of information about the Bible but have no spiritual
discernment.
Paul's
prayer was that the Christians' hearts in Ephesus and all that read it would be
enlightened. For us to have enlightenment in the gospel of Christ Jesus means
that we must have a deep understanding of the principles of Scripture in our
souls that will influence our daily walk with Christ. Our souls do not
become enlightened at the heartbeat of our Salvation, nor does it happen at any
one point in our new lives in Christ Jesus. Spiritual growth in our walk with
our Lord and Savior is gradual and ongoing. To have an enlightened heart for
God, we must have a daily regimen of God's Word and daily prayer. When we begin
that contingent, we will be open to the Holy Spirit’s leading guidance and
direction. When the eyes of our understanding become enlightened is an
indication that the light of Christ Jesus has irradiated every fragment of our
heart, mind, spirit, body, and soul.
When
the light of Christ Jesus encompasses our entire being, the Holy Spirit will
lead us to the truth of God's Word. This divine enlightenment is what happened
to Paul on the "Damascus Road" and to the two disciples on the
"Road to Emmaus" when the Lord opened their eyes, and they recognized
Jesus as who He was (Luke 24:31-32).
