Bible Verse of the Day Friday February 12th 2021

Mark: 15:37-39 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

John 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Most of those who suffered and died from crucifixion spent the last few hours on the Cross either unconscious or in total fatigue. In the case of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, He was alert and able to speak right up to His last breath. There are two things that we notice from the verse in Mark. First, God tore down the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple. From that point forward, instead of meeting humanity in the Temple, His Holy Spirit would indwell all believers.

The second thing we see in Mark 15:37 is that one of the Roman Soldiers at the Cross came to believe that Christ Jesus was the true Son of God. We do not know if this man became a follower and believer in Christ Jesus, but he did accept that He was the true promised Messiah (Joel 2:32; Romans 10:13).

From John 19:30, we see the last words Jesus spoke before giving up His spirit, "it is finished." In the Greek language, these three English words are one word, tetelestai, which means to fulfill, end, and complete. All humans owed the sin debt because of our first earthly ancestors' sin, but now was paid in full. Sometimes right before this happened, God, the Father, placed on Jesus all the guilt and wrath we owed. We should have borne the penalty for our sin but it was paid it in full by Jesus on the Cross of Calvary,

There have been some great events in human history, the birth of our Lord and Savior comes to mind, the parting of the Red Sea to allow the Children of Israel escape their bondage, to name a couple. However, the most significant event that has ever taken place in the history of humankind was when Christ Jesus freely and joyfully laid down His life and suffered the shame, pain, and humiliation on the Cross of Calvary, to give us eternal life with our Creator (Hebrews 12:2).

Christ Jesus's sacrifice on that "Old Rugged Cross" provided all that we need for the remission of our sin, past, present, and future (Hebrews 9:24-28). That one selfless and loving act of our Lord and Savior encompassed every demand of the Law. There is nothing that we can do to ensure our eternal life with God, Jesus did it all, and we owe all to Him. Studying the concluding hours of the earthly life of Christ Jesus, from the final supper with His disciples in the Upper Room until His last breath on the Cross, we can see just how determined He was to go to the Cross and pay for our sins. From all of His faithful Children to Him: Thank you Lord, for saving our souls.
