2 Samuel 7:28-29 Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever."
Today's Bible verse is
a prayer of thanksgiving from King David when he finds out that his offspring
will be building a house for God. God significantly blessed David's life: he
began it as a shepherd boy watching his father's flock of sheep and ended it as
the leader of the great Nation of Israel. David is asking God to do what He had
promised, to bless his descendants forever. David learned early in his life in
every battle that he must fight, be it on a physical battlefield of war or a
spiritual struggle, that the only hope was that the presence of God was with
him.
David knew full
well that when God makes a promise that He is going to keep that promise, so
David asked God to keep His promise to bless his house for generations to come.
When David said that he had found the courage to pray this prayer, it was David
saying to God, "I am praying for this because of your promise, and you
said that this is what you wanted to do."
God sends us
promises in His Holy Word, and He is pleased when we believe these promises and
when we use them. God does not send these promises for us to ignore; it brings
God glory when we actively use His promises. We do this by believing that the
contract is valid and share it with others to know that He is the Creator of
all in Heaven and on earth and that He is our savior and sustainer. Some might
say: how do I use these promises from God? We can use the promise of
forgiveness of our sins when we confess our sins (1 John 1:9); we can
use His promise of Spiritual growth through our sanctification process (Philippians
1:6).
The greatest
blessing that ever came from David's descendants occurred 28 generations from
David (Matthew 1:17). The greatest promised blessing that has ever been
bestowed on any of us as humans is the blessing of the promised Messiah.
We were out of fellowship with God because of what our first parents did in the Garden of Eden. We were at enmity and separated from our Creator. Because of a love that none of us will ever be able to understand or comprehend this side of Heaven, Christ Jesus stretched out His arms as wide as he could and said: "I love you this much." Then He laid down and let the Roman soldiers drive nails in his hands and feet, nailing Him to the Cross of Calvary. He laid down His life, shed His perfect, sinless blood to pay a sin debt that He did not owe, an obligation for us that we could never pay so that we might know eternal life. Jesus could not have provided any grander testimony of the love that He possessed for all people of the world (John 3:16; John 15:13). As we continue to demonstrate our love for others, with the love of Jesus filling every void of our hearts and souls, we will sacrifice our lives for His service and the service of others. We do not lay our lives down in one grand and glorious act but giving of our life’s day by day in His service and the service of others.
