I Thessalonians 5:19-21 Do not quench
the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt, but test them
all; hold on to what is good,
Just
because we have believed something to be the truth of God's Word for twenty,
thirty, or forty years or even longer does not necessarily make it the reality.
We should test our beliefs frequently and recurrently, comparing it to the only
guideline and measure that counts for the truth, the Bible. Our fleshly nature
or human nature is somewhat lazy; it will always take the path of least
resistance. It will put its faith in and count on human beings' reasoning, what
we have heard others say for years. Sometimes our slothful human nature will
hold fast to existing traditions. This languor will occur because sometimes we
do not want to do a strict regimen of Bible study.
Human
nature will fight back from the humbling aspect of letting the Bible, with its
simple unmistakable, straightforward truth, ascertain and support certain
matters and seek out humanly conceived ideas instead. When we look at the
Church universal over the past half-century or so, it undoubtedly shows
Christians' downfall relying on denominational doctrine to direct peoples understanding
and comprehension of the truth of God's Word.
It
is a fact that different people have very different opinions concerning what
the Bible says. For the most part, the reason for this is that folks come to
the Bible with their preconceived ideas and find a scripture or two, taken out
of context, to prove their false ideas. All the while disregarding and flouting
clear and unambiguous parts of scripture clearly and unmistakably disputes and
disproves their inflexible and predetermined beliefs. God may very well use
this as a test to ascertain our hearts' true and veritable intentions. Are we
ready to submit our lives and hearts to the straightforward, unblemished, and
perfect truth, as God has given us in His Holy Word? Are we willing to humbly
surrender ourselves to the beauty of the genuine truth of the Bible? Are we
inclined to submit ourselves to the leading, guiding, and direction of the Holy
Spirit, seeking out a proper spiritual foundation (Deuteronomy
8:2-3; Psalm 149:4)?
On
the other hand, some will unwisely choose as an alternative to keep latched on
to their long-held preconceived ideas, beliefs, and opinions. It is equivalent
to a sandcastle on a picturesque beach, it can be a beautiful thing, but it is
unstable, shaky, and temporary. The clear and consistent truth of the Word of
God is not built on sand but on the Solid Rock of Ages. When the storms of life
come our way, and come they will, only one of these foundations will stand (Matthew 7:24-27). Clear scriptures are a solid-rock foundation. On
the other hand, ambiguous misinterpretations of scriptures, open to private
interpretation, lead to a foundation of sand. Only one of these foundations
will stand when storms come.
